Beta-glucan

1 products

Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide, a long chain of sugar molecules, found in the cell walls of oats, yeast, mushrooms and seaweed. Its structure lets it bind water and form a light film on skin, and the yeast-derived versions in particular have been studied for their interaction with skin immune cells.Reviews of beta-glucan extracts describe water-binding and film-forming hydration, soothing of redness and discomfort, antioxidant activity, and support for the look of damaged or photoaged skin, including reduced roughness and the appearance of wrinkle depth. It is a well-regarded ingredient for sensitive and compromised skin, and it is one of the few humectants with a soothing story attached rather than hydration alone.Brands often position it as an alternative to hyaluronic acid that penetrates deeper. The molecule is large, so deep penetration claims are hard to support; what you can reasonably expect is comfortable, lasting surface hydration and less visible reactivity, which is a good outcome in its own right. It suits sensitive, irritated, reactive and post-procedure skin, and people who want hydration without the tacky feel some hyaluronic acid serums leave behind. It is also a sensible vegan alternative to snail mucin. Oat-derived versions are worth checking if you have a gluten sensitivity that extends to topical products. There is no real reason to avoid it otherwise.Beta-glucan combines with everything: niacinamide, ceramides, panthenol, peptides, centella. Because it is soothing rather than active, it is a useful partner for a routine built around retinoids or acids, applied on the nights in between.Ours is the star of the iUNIK Beta Glucan Power Moisture Serum, a simple formula for skin that reacts to most things.
