Glutathione
Glutathione is a small peptide made of three amino acids, produced naturally in your cells, where it is one of the body’s own antioxidants. In cosmetics it is used for its effect on pigment: glutathione appears to shift melanin production toward the lighter pheomelanin and away from the darker eumelanin, and it inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that starts the pigment process. The evidence deserves a careful reading. Systematic reviews of glutathione for skin tone conclude that results are inconsistent and the study quality is mixed. Most of the research covers oral supplements or intravenous use, and the intravenous route carries safety warnings from regulators in several countries. Topical work is limited: one commonly cited trial used 2 percent oxidized glutathione and reported measurable lightening in sun-exposed areas but not in protected ones. Glutathione is also an unstable molecule, so how a given formula holds up matters as much as the percentage.Brands promise visibly brighter, clearer, more even skin. It is fair to expect a subtle evening effect over months in a well-made formula, and unrealistic to expect a change in your natural skin tone.It suits people with dullness and mild uneven tone who want an antioxidant alongside their routine, and it is generally well tolerated. Skip it if you are looking for the fastest route to visible spot fading, where vitamin C, tranexamic acid, azelaic acid or niacinamide have stronger track records, and give oral or injected versions a wide berth without medical supervision. It layers happily with niacinamide, vitamin C derivatives and hyaluronic acid, and none of these do much without daily sunscreen, since ultraviolet exposure restarts the process you are trying to slow.Ours is in the numbuzin No.5 Glutathione Vitamin Dark Spot Cream.
