Panthenol
Panthenol is provitamin B5: once it is on skin it converts to pantothenic acid, a vitamin your body uses in normal cell metabolism. In formulas it appears as D-panthenol or dexpanthenol, and it does two jobs at once, drawing in water like a humectant and helping skin hold onto it.Panthenol is one of the better-documented soothing ingredients in cosmetics. Clinical and laboratory research supports improved hydration, reduced transepidermal water loss, support for barrier repair and a measurable calming effect on irritated skin, which is why dexpanthenol creams are a pharmacy staple in Europe for chapped and post-procedure skin. It is used in the 1 to 5 percent range and is well tolerated by almost everyone.Brands describe panthenol as healing or repairing. Those words overstate the case for a cosmetic: what it reliably does is make skin more comfortable, less tight and less visibly red while the barrier recovers on its own schedule. It suits dry, flaky, wind-burned or over-exfoliated skin, skin adjusting to retinoids, and sensitive skin generally. It is a good ingredient to look for in sunscreens and moisturizers if you get tightness by mid-afternoon. There is very little reason to skip it, though allergic contact reactions to panthenol have been reported in rare cases, usually in people with existing eczema.Panthenol conflicts with nothing. It pairs naturally with ceramides, centella, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, and it is the ingredient to reach for when you have overdone an active and need a quiet week. You will find it supporting the formula in the Purito SEOUL Luminous Ceramide Moisturizer and in the Round Lab Birch Juice Sun Cream.
